This little record was recorded in conjunction with “Words Uncaged,” a graduate class that worked with inmates on Life Without Parole at Lancaster State Penitentiary, in Lancaster, California. The class was designed to help inmates dialogue and critically engage with the world beyond their prison walls. Each song here is inspired by a narrative, provided by an inmate who was involved in the program. My hope is that each man’s story is honored & his voice is heard,& that our understanding of incarcerated men and women and the current prison industrial complex might be challenged or at the very least, broadened.
